Work with someone
who understands your
Middle English: from Old French compaignon, literally ‘one who breaks bread with another.’
Based on Latin com- ‘together with’ + panis ‘bread.’
Spiritual companioning is a form of ministry that focuses on cultivating the intimate relationship with the Divine that already exists but often feels opaque and distant . My work as a companion is not to tell you what to do, but to help you listen to the Divine voice.
What does working with me look like?
Do I need to pray or meditate to work with you?
I am not a substitute for the Divine voice. I am simply here to help you better listen to it. My role is to companion you on your sacred journey. The real director is the Divine. In order to listen to the Divine voice, you must set aside intentional time. Like any relationship, you have to put in effort if you want to see results. Sometimes people say, “Well, my time in the garden is my meditation.” And I believe them. I have had gardens and I know how peaceful that work can be. But it is not the same as committing to the discipline of sacred listening where your entire focus is to build the Divine relationship. Your meditation or prayer practice does not have to look like mine, but for us to work together you must have a commitment to at least 20-30 a day of intentional contemplation. If this is new for you, no problem, I can help. But this commitment becomes the foundation for all of our work together. There are other spiritual companions who give different answers to this, but I only know how to help those who have this commitment.
What is our commitment to one another?
I like to meet every week or every other week. It is hard for me to stay truly connected to your journey and to the relationship when we meet less frequently than that. I meet with people both in-person and online for about 50 minutes, give or take. We begin with a short silent grounding to see where the voice is speaking within us and then explore where the Divine has appeared for you since the last time we spoke. Very often people want to experience powerful encounters with God and get disappointed with how mundane most of this work can seem. But the Divine lives in every moment, so together we explore the hidden and quiet earthy messages that have shifted your life, much like a boat being carried down the river. On some level, it may seem unglamorous, but my intention is not to help you chase one spiritual high after another, but to help you feel the intimacy of every moment.
